2 steps to create a vision for your life
If you are uninspired, stressed, or overwhelmed in your current life and feel like something is missing, it might be time to pause and reevaluate. On the surface, things might be great, but if you keep getting this nagging feeling that something is missing, or you are not reaching your full potential, this is the time to do something about it. And it doesn't have to be a grandeur gesture, uprooting life change, or a bad haircut. You can start small, by making single changes in your life. But first, be clear on what is that you are truly wanting out of life and what vision you have for your life.
A clear and compelling vision is essential for guiding your life decisions and shaping your future. It serves as a roadmap, illuminating the path toward your goals and aspirations. It will motivate you daily, help you make decisions, and develop new habits.
Here are several steps to help you create a vision for your life.
1. Reflect on Your Values
Start by assessing what truly matters to you. Consider your core values—these are the beliefs and principles that define who you are. Write down your top five values and think about how they can influence your vision.
2. Imagine Your Ideal Life
Take some time to envision the life you desire. What does it look like? Where do you live? What kind of work do you do? Who are the people surrounding you? Allow your imagination to run free, crafting a vivid mental image of your ideal life. This exercise will help clarify what you want to strive for.
Alternatively, you can approach creating the vision from an internal or external point of view.
If you want to apply an internal lens, ask yourself:
What is the most important thing in your life?
What is your dream life?
What do you daydream about?
What matters to you the most?
What might you regret if you never accomplished it?
Example:
I want to be the best in my professional field.
I want to transform people’s well-being.
On the flip side, with the external lens, you take a look
What would you like to be remembered for?
What legacy would you like to leave behind?
What would you want people to say in your eulogy?
What would make people close to you proud?
Examples:
I want people to recognize & appreciate the impact I made on the world through volunteering.
In my eulogy, I want people to say I was the most loving, patient, and generous person they knew.
As you imagine your future life, write all the elements of it. It might be challenging to pick one element that is the most important, so take your time, noodle on it, and review your list every few days, and the answer will come.
In my case, I went broad with various vision statements, but I kept coming back to one vision I kept daydreaming about… “Live a life filled with joy, love, learning & new experiences”. It inspires me to take action & make it a reality.
